It was a beautiful January day - 70 degrees and not a cloud in the sky - and Katy suggested a "hike" at Vasquez Rocks. I say hike in quotes because the kids don't really move that fast, what with all the cool stuff to look at and climb.

We got everybody geared up and got started with a little rock climbing. The small arrow in the picture on the left shows where Claire and I are sitting in the picture on the right. She is quite the little climber - fearless, calm, and surefooted.

Cameron was happy to find a "cave" to sit in while Claire and I worked our way back down from the ridge.

As we had a quick snack, Cameron checked out this damselfly.

The kids just wanted to scamper to the top of any rock they could find. I say they're about ready for a trip to Joshua Tree.

We finally made it to the display dwelling, where the kids ran around like, well, wild Indians.

But not before another snack break.

When we got back to the parking lot there were some people taking pictures of their Pulse AutoCycle, a modified motorcycle with a fiberglass shell on it. The owners were very kind and let the kids climb in for some pictures. Cool!

Anyway, the kids had a good time, with only minor scrapes and twists, so I suppose we'll make our way back there sometime. I highly recommend it as an easy rock-scampering location for families.
