We decided to take the "back way" out to Joshua Tree, taking the Pearblossom Highway from Palmdale across to Hesperia and then heading down Old Woman Springs Highway into Yucca Valley.

The drive through Hesperia led through some "underdeveloped" neighborhoods. This road is shown as a heavy red line in Delorme's California Atlas.
