I went from a junior high kid to a college graduate in the 80's. The movies of John Hughes always seemed to be lurking in the background as I grew up.

That said, I had never seen "Pretty In Pink." I wasn't interested when it came out, and somehow I'd never been interested all the thousands of times it had been on cable.

Until this summer. The combination of circumstances required for me to be willing to watch Pretty In Pink are apparently being alone in a dumpy motel room in a small town in Illinois. It happened to be on cable while I packed my suitcase after helping clean out my grandmother's old apartment.

Wow. What a dog. I don't even know where to begin. It's a terrible movie with a see-through plot and ridiculous characters. Hated it.

I'd rather watch Secret of My Success. (Like I'm doing as I type this.)

Last Friday I finally completed a diabolical-level Sudoku.

Ha!

One more thing - no guessing was involved. The redrawn square on the left was needed because I realized after writing in an 8 that there were other possibilities for that spot.

This summer my in-laws took us all on a cruise to Alaska for their 45th anniversary.

I wore my San Diego marathon T-shirt on the ship one day. I will admit that I chose to forgo a sweatshirt or jacket so the logo on the shirt was more visible.

I was in the buffet getting breakfast (and representing) when I saw a guy wearing another race shirt:

"1,000 mile barefoot run across Death Valley in August while donating blood and saving puppies and children" (or some similar ultramarathon)

Stupid showboating ultramarathoners. Pfft.
